by Dougal McIntyre
Portrait of John McIntyre, a 19th/20th century Scottish shipbuilder.

Accompanied by many colour illustrations, this profile of a Victorian shipbuilder contains a wealth of valuable information for historians and researchers interested in the history of shipbuilding in Scotland during the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century

John McIntyre was a fourth-generation Clydeside shipbuilder whose working life of 50 years took him through eight shipyards from Paisley to Yoker to Canada to Alloa to Govan then finally to Troon and Irvine, having influenced, through design or construction, the building of over 100 ships, many of which are illustrated in this account.

John McIntyre's own handwritten recollections have been brought together with photographs and additional material researched by his grandson, Dougal McIntyre.

This history follows John McIntyre through the highs and lows of the Scottish shipbuilding industry from his 1860s upbringing on Clydeside to his successful establishment of the shipyard at Irvine for the Ayrshire Dockyard Company, to his 1930s retirement years in Ayr.
